In its recent update to the OpenShift platform, Red Hat has taken a step to facilitate IT or third-party vendors to create connections to internal or external services by adding a service catalog among several other aspects. OpenShift is based upon Kubernetes. While Kubernetes is the open source container management platform, OpenShift is Red Hat’s platform as a service.
Prominent companies such as Volvo, United Health, and Deutsche Bank are looking at Red Hat as a prospective partner since these companies, and several others, are making the shift from virtual machines to containers. And that is the reason why there is an increasing demand for platforms like OpenShift. Container technology is being adopted in a widespread manner. In some way or the other, every company is adopting this technology. OpenShift helps these companies to make the transition to containers seamless.
With the widespread adoption of the container technology, companies are experiencing a surge in their customer base. This has resulted these companies to strive hard in building out the platform for the IT departments of larger companies who want the connection between containerized applications with internal and external services easier.
The Service Catalog in some ways is analogous to an application retail outlet where developers can go and find pre-configured connectors. To an Oracle database, this could be an internal connector, while external to a public cloud service from AWS or Azure. But what differentiates the Service Catalog from the application retail outlet is the lack of any procurement capability. But this, as per Joe Fernandes, senior director of product management for OpenShift at Red Hat, is only temporary. In future, it is very likely that there will be procurement alternative.
Although customers could make service connections to internal or external services before, it would take a lot more effort. With Service Catalog, the goal is to provide a packaged approach so that the work of the users is minimized. This would facilitate speed of implementation to be highly efficient.
In this launch, the Service Catalog is obtainable as a specialized preview. The upcoming launch is due before the end of the year.
