Tech News: Microsoft’s Latest Release of .NET Core 2.0 & More

The recent launch of Microsoft’s .Net Core, an upgrade to company’s open source, cross-platform implementation of .Net, includes improvements intended to make .Net Core easier to use. It also adheres to the .Net Standard 2.0 specification designed to assist code sharing among .Net Framework, .Net Core, and Xamarin.

The .Net Core framework possesses the cross-platform qualities which facilitates building web applications and services that run on Windows, MacOS, or Linux. This version also includes an opt-in mode across operating systems and languages providing basic globalization functionality for localized user interfaces and data. Also featuring with this version is profile-guided optimization, used by C++ compiler to generate faster running code on Windows x86 and Linux x64 platforms.

The .Net standard specification attempts to unify .Net and prevent fragmentation by ensuring that every .Net implementation supports and enables code-sharing across .Net variants including .Net Framework, .Net Core, Xamarin, and Unity. With this version, the number of APIs has been doubled totaling to 32000. Such a great number of APIs will enable to port existing code from one .Net implementation to another.

Microsoft has also released the 2.0 versions of the ASP.Net Core development framework and the Entity Framework Core object-relational mapper. ASP.Net Core is a well-suited framework for cloud-based applications connected to the Internet. Featuring the Razor Pages user interface design paradigm, ASP.Net 2.0 has made provisions to make coding of page-focused apps easier. It also includes the built-in templates for the Angular and React JavaScript development tools. And when it comes to querying, Entity Framework Core 2.0 improves LINQ (Language Integrated Query) translation with much efficient queries.

Finally, Microsoft has also released updates to Visual Studio 2017 (version 15.3) and Visual Studio for Mac (version 7.1) allowing developers to work with .Net Core 2.0. Both these new versions of the IDEs have been released recently. Visual Studio Code also works with .Net Core 2.0. This release has been a major one for .Net and a minor one for Visual Studio.
