SharePoint 2016: How does it improve the security for your organization?

Packed with vast array of much improved features and capabilities, SharePoint 2016 Intranet is going to be power to office dwellers. Enhanced on-premise internal communication management and dynamic collaboration approach are the compelling highlights of the new SharePoint update this year. Encrypted SMTP connections

SharePoint 2016 will weave excellent security improvements around the SMTP service. This means that SP2016 will use StartTLS connection encryption for encrypting emails sent from SharePoint. SMTP service will also acknowledge and use non-standard ports.

Earlier an attacker had a chance to decrypt the data due to SSL 3.0 vulnerability. Now SharePoint security will disable SSL 3.0 connection encryption by default, as well as certain encryption algorithms with known weaknesses.

DLP (Data Loss Prevention) policy

In SharePoint 2016, you can avail a data loss prevention (DLP) policy with which it becomes easy to identify, monitor, and automatically protect sensitive information across your SharePoint site collections. The DLP approach takes care of:

  • Identifying existing sensitive information in your site collections
  • Monitoring and automatically protecting sensitive information in your site collections

DLP policies: creation and education

Users can create and manage DLP policies in the Compliance Policy Center. The process takes two steps: Create the DLP policy and assign policy to a site collection.

Creating DLP policy means choosing a DLP template that determines the nature and type of sensitive information you would like to protect. The DLP policy then takes the following actions to initiate the protection of data:

Sends an incident report to your compliance officer with details of the event on such as the title, document owner, and relevant sensitive information of detected content.

Notifies the user with a policy tip when they save or edit the document of sensitive information, explaining the gravity of the action and DLP policy rules.

Blocks access to the content for everyone except the site owner, document owner, and person who last modified the document. Policy tips are thus designed to favour the education of the people without affecting their work flow.

Assigning DLP policy includes assigning it to one or more site collections so that it will protect important information in those locations.

A policy tip is a notification or warning that educates and notifies someone working with content that contains PII and conflicts with a DLP policy.
